Despite the limited combat actions during the Petrich Incident of October 1925, the event gained great international resonance and became a test for the effectiveness and the role of the newly established international organization, the League of Nations. The press in Great Britain, France, the USA, Australia, and New Zealand covered the case with different emphases – British media stressed the need for modelling collective security, French publications focused on diplomatic mediation by France, while American outlets viewed it as an example of the peaceful settlement of disputes. Under pressure from the Great Powers, the League of Nations achieved a ceasefire and obliged Greece to pay compensation to Bulgaria. The international public accepted this as a success for diplomacy. The prevailing opinion in the press was that the incident was a symbol of early efforts for preserving international order through the League of Nations and proof that even a small conflict can have a global impact.
